Top US commander getting award from Princeton (AP)

PRINCETON, N.J. – The U.S. commander overseeing troops in Iraq and Afghanistan is receiving one of Princeton University's top honors for its alumni.

Gen. David Petraeus was scheduled to speak Saturday at Princeton, where he is being given the Madison Medal, which goes to alumni of the graduate school.

The general received a master's degree from Princeton in 1987 and a Ph.D. in 1989.

He has defended President Obama's decision to announce that he intends to start pulling U.S. troops out of Afghanistan by July 2011, saying it sends a message to Afghan leaders that they should prepare for a transition of power.
